Step One: Find your Happy
When I set out to create a new scent combination, I often try to recall a scent I’ve smelled and loved. A walk in the woods with my dad. A rainbow popsicle from the ice cream truck as a little girl. A field trip to the apple orchard in elementary school, where we all walked away with a caramel covered apple. Studies reveal that scent is one of the most powerful triggers of memory, and my goal is to be reminded of places and experiences that have brought me joy. Thinking of a scent that invokes a specific memory is often the best source of inspiration when it comes to creating your own combinations.
Step Two: Understand complimentary fragrances
Magic happens when you’re able to pull scents from all over the spectrum and create something completely unique. Here are some fragrance families that I’ve found work really well together:
Fruity & Sweet
Fruity notes will cut through the richness of a sweet scent, resulting in a fragrance that feels fresh and energizing, yet still indulgent and inviting.
Example: Lemon Verbena + Vanilla Sugar = Lemon Pound Cake
Earthy & Clean
Clean and fresh scents will lift and brighten deep earthy notes, creating a blend that feels both invigorating and comforting.
Example: Bonfire + Seagrass & Sage = Sage Embers
Floral & Citrus
A citrus and floral combination screams elegance. The floral notes will soften the sharpness of citrus, while the citrus will enhance the freshness and clarity of a floral note. These scent families, when combined, often feel very natural and outdoorsy.
Example: Florence (floral) + Sicily (citrus) = Urban Solstice
